Wetland Hills Encounters (Hexcrawl25)

Running the hex-crawl I realised I needed an encounter table for the general region and cooked up the below for 'folks likely to be wandering around with purpose'.

This will be a dual-use table:
Minor factions of the wetland hills (roll 2d6)
Random Encounter (roll d20)
1. Bog mummy
2. Spider riders - ambushing from the trees, using web snares, firing arrows from spider-back
3. Boar riders - charging through the swamps, snuffling after your trail, hurling javelins after you
4. Toad riders - pouncing from cover, snagging with long tongues, stabbing with jagged daggers
5. Mushroom magic-potion shaman and their minions - insular and taciturn until the shaman deals out the mushroom liquor and berserk strength comes with it
6. Goblin blowpipers - stalkers, silent cultivators of poisons, watchers and gleaners
7. Snakefolk - proud, entitled, prone to furious offence at the unknowing trespass of strangers
8. Jaguar tabaxi - sleek, smug in their position as apex predators
9. Raccoons - Just raccoons. Make up for with determination and sheer luck what the lack in sentience
10. Swamp treants - waiting everyone out so they can have quiet again
11. Wyvern witch and followers - minor warlord-in-waiting, let down by the quality of her minions. Minions are desperate to win favour
12. Harpy coven & associates - well fed in these rich swamps and generous with the time and knowledge to the respectful
13. Hippopotami
14. Wild giant toads
15. Snakes
16. Jaguars
17. Dire Spiders
18. Ooze
19. Troll
20. Hydra

I came up with the above by scrubbing 'swamp' tables from different editions Monster Manuals and then scrubbing through some wargames and computer games for different ways to distinguish goblins. Warhammer, Age of Wonders III, Confrontation and various tumblr posts were grist to the mill for this one.

As part of the Hexcrawl25 exercise I rolled for big hexes to tag each of the 2-12 entries to a home hex. Then within that hex everyone gets a couple of sites in sub-hexes:
home base - a camp, tower, lair, whatever
'field activities' site with them actively doing something
'source of their power' location - herds, plants, etc.
minor outpost where they passively manage something
'goal' site in some other hex

These give each of those factions a footprint on the map that the party can stumble into but also throwing in a bit more variety than just 'each faction has a lair'. I will probably do this much then see what treasures and valuables seem reasonable for each faction based on what is near them and then develop the factions iteratively that way.

  1. I wouldn't have recognized the confrontation goblins, even though I love them, but now that you mention it, they are great to recycle in others games!
    Thx for the table!
