Review: Burgs & Baliffs by Paolo Greco

tl:dr; a content-packed zine, lots of useful things in here with a nice urban theme.

Recommended on most lists of 'what to get for gaming off Lulu' Burgs & Bailiffs by Paolo Greco is a 'zine full of articles on the European Middle Ages written specifically for roleplaying game use. With articles on justice, tournament, warfare, cities, illness and medicine Burgs & Bailiffs will bring a more historical feeling to your game.

Burgs & Baliffs, POD from Lulu

First impression - at €4 the zine is a steal - shipping will kill you if you order them on their own but next time you go anywhere near Lulu, throw this in on top, you will not be disappointed.

So what do you get?
Medieval tournaments (5 pages)
Settling Disputes - Ordeals & Trials (5)
Bowmen: Class & War (2)

Each article is a useful chunk to drop into your game - my favourites are Medieval tournaments, Settling Disputes, Leeches and The Night Watch.
Medieval Tournaments gives you inputs to get you contenders and run your main events at a classic tournament with jousting and a melee. Highly likely you will be able to use this as a set piece at some point so good to have in hand.

Settling Disputes is also great 'they did not live like we did' colour - Trial by Ordeal, Jury and Combat are all options in here along with some good stuff on punishments.

Leeches is another good flavour piece if you want to have medical proceedures more in line with a knowledge limited era that greatly increase the perils of wounds and disease. May not be for everyones tastes but good inspiration.

The Night Watch is good both for creating said watch and night-time encounters but also as the seed for a potential campaign - be the Night Watch yourselves.

All in all lots of useful things in here - very old-school with its chances-in-6 and the like. Great stuff for trying to get your head around the day to day of medieval cities and make them feel really different. Probably not going to create places you would love to go on holiday to but definitely good for adventure.
